Why Kathy?

There are many tutors out there, so why choose me?

Let me take a moment to have a one-sided introduction so when you call or email we can focus on you and your child!

First, I want you to feel comfortable that your child will be in good hands. I look forward to meeting you and I am glad to provide references. Having regular opportunities to visit about the needs and concerns you have for your child is a top priority for me.

I am a mother and grandmother, consequently spending hours with my grandchildren (in person and online from afar) sharing my love of reading and the secret world found within books. I am familiar with motivational systems that work for children (and some that don't!). I want this experience to be something your child looks forward to each week, not another thing you feel you need to make him or her do.

I have taught second grade and fourth grade, as well as being a reading specialist, all in the Cherry Creek School District. I have worked as a mentor for parents of preschool children, with Rocky Mountain Parents as Teachers, helping children acquire skills and habits needed for school. Most recently I have tutored, using Core Knowledge instructional materials and have completed my certification for Orton Gillingham's Basic Language Course. These have all focused on explicit instruction for young and/or struggling readers teaching what is known as "The Science of Reading." It is a multisensory, structured and diagnostic course. It is based on systematic instruction in the logical connection between the sounds and symbols in our English language. The student learns and understands the rules of our language and how to apply those skills to become a fluid and proficient reader. It is exciting to see the progress made by readers with these methods of instruction!

Learning to read comes one piece at a time, and when children are only learning to read in a large class they may not fully learn certain skills, but the class is ready to move on. Often these gaps go undetected solely because the child is in a large group. Sometimes a child may learn a skill but not have enough practice to solidify it. Sometimes a child may be embarrassed or stressed about not being able to perform a certain reading skill and find ways to compensate for it, hiding that learning gap.

That's where 1:1 tutoring comes in!

Tutoring is NOT:
-trying to make a child perform exactly like his or her peers

Tutoring IS:
-spending dedicated time on areas perceived as weaknesses and making them strengths
-assessing what skills may be lacking that are holding a child back from full potential
-smoothing the stumbling blocks that are making it hard for a child to feel successful academically
-boosting confidence in a child's learning ability
-learning at a child's own pace
-individualized attention to round out a child's reading ability
-FINDING JOY IN READING!

We all learn at different speeds and from various styles. There is beauty in our learning differences! Let's individualize the instruction and hands on learning for YOUR student and celebrate learning and growth together ...

through tutoring!

Hear from PARENTS of Kathy's tutoring students:

"She has found a perfect balance between being engaging and focused, which helps my son look forward to tutoring. She can get him to focus on what he's doing, which is sometimes a challenge, and really make some progress." -Steven, dad of 9 y.o.

"Before tutoring with Kathy, there were often tears trying to do reading at home for school. Now my kiddo WANTS to go sit down with a chapter book...I'm seriously blown away with how far he's come." -Kristen, mom of 9 y.o.
