Does My Child Need a Tutor?

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body – Joseph Addison

Just as we sometimes need a physical therapist to help adjust parts of the body that aren't correctly functioning, sometimes we need tutoring to become aware of what "reading muscles" (vowel pairs? decoding? visual recall?) may be weak and in need of some focused exercise.

Does my child need a tutor?

There are various reasons to have a private tutor. Over the past two years, many interruptions have affected our children’s education!

Sometimes, a child needs some one-on-one instruction to help focus on particular needs to help him gain confidence in his ability to learn and to progress according to his abilities. This may take some time, as the child is helped according to his best style of learning (visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic). Explicit, phonetic instruction helps a child to understand the structure and rules of language. Many learn to read by “feel”. Some need to know and understand the building blocks to become proficient readers.

With individual training, a child can often learn to block out distractions and to focus more easily. She will also learn to express her ideas in words, spoken and written. Of most importance, she will learn to work according to her individual abilities!

Once this is accomplished, he or she will be more equipped to keep up and continue to learn in a classroom setting.
